A STORY THAT BEGINS OVER 300 YEARS AGO
Verdeau Lifestyle Estate is situated on the last remaining part of the original Champagne farm in Wellington. To pay homage to the estate’s unique heritage, the streets within Verdeau have been named after the French Huguenots who settled in the area. The longest street on the estate is named after the original owner of the property, Hercule Verdeau.
In 1688, the 16-year-old Hercule Verdeau came to seek a new home in the Cape, where he married Marie-Catherine Wibaut. They acquired the Champagne farm in 1698, beautifully positioned along the Spruit River. The farm was sold several times, initially to Estienne Cronier, then to Jacob Naude, and eventually in 1883 Francois Paulus Marais sold part of the farm to establish the town of Wellington.
